Introductions

Character’s Name ∙ Boaz Bakkarai, Prince of Carthak
Age ∙ 20
Gender ∙ Male
Residing ∙ University
Character Class ∙ Carthaki Royalty
Occupation ∙ Prince/University Student

Mindset

Sexual Orientation ∙ Heterosexual
Gift ∙ Boaz has the Gift for healing, it is moderate in strength and because he has had much training, very much under his control. His Gift works best for healing maladies that are not visible to the naked eye like diseases and viruses, but he is also competent in healing more conventional injuries like wounds, broken bones, etc. His Gift is ruby red in color.
Overall Personality ∙ The Carthaki prince is proud, perhaps even excessively so. His pride stems from three main sources, in his personal identity, his lineage, and the great nation of Carthak. As a prince, it was rare that he is denied anything that he desires and so has very high expectations about what he is owed and if he thinks that it is not enough he will not hesitate to say so. He is also condescending toward anyone who he thinks is lower than himself, but when dealing with people who are more important than himself he will be very respectful.

Boaz loves his parties; some would even say that he lives for them. He considers himself a “womanizer” which is fairly accurate even though he is certainly not a romantic and he doesn’t much care for women because of their personalities or intelligent conversation. At times Boaz can put on all of his charms and be rather successful with this (usually his charms are reserved for people who are above or equal to him in rank) but most of the time he comes off as arrogant and rude, saying whatever comes to mind, even if it is not very nice or polite. Most people must disregard this behavior because he is, after all, the prince.

He is most comfortable in a crowd, preferably if he is in the center of it. Throwing parties is his favorite past time, followed closely by attending parties. He does know how to have good time and no party is complete without him there, not to mention Boaz would intentionally kill anyone’s social career if he missed an invitation to a single party. This raises a dilemma for many Carthaki nobles because they even if they don’t want a quiet get together they shouldn’t invite Boaz (he tends to get rather wild), but they have to. Luckily, Boaz gets many invitations and will often consider some parties too boring and not attend them, he only wants to be invited just to appease his pride.

When it comes to school work he is very good at it, the only problem is that he hardly ever attends class and when he does he is more interested in the ladies or he simply just dozes off. He hates being told what to do, when a professor tries to give him instructions he will disregard them or mock them, but never learn from them. The only people who he ever listens to are his father, sometimes his mother, and perhaps the Tortallan royalty if he sees it to his advantage.

Boaz has a short temper and drastic mood swings, he can go from happy to furious in a matter of seconds, then back again. He is quick to anger, slow to forgive, and will never forget any perceived wrong. However, if anyone else attempts to behave the same way, he will surely dislike him or her.

Jealousy and insecurity are issues that Boaz often hides with arrogance and by appearing not to care about anything. He is constantly watching others and comparing himself to them, he feels very competitive and that he has to be the best at everything or it isn’t worth doing. If he can’t be better at something than someone else he will go out of his way to cut them down, all while seeming to be over-confident and secure in himself.

Reflection

Height ∙ 5’8”
Weight ∙ 170 lbs
Overall Appearance ∙ Boaz has very dark skin and long black that he keeps in dred locks, which often will have little gold beads tied to them or other pieces of jewelry. For official parties he has wig made from black hair that is straight and sleek and will cover his real hair nicely, making him look more respectable. Boaz spends a great deal of time working on his body, true to Carthak fashion he often wears outfits that do not require shirts so he feels that in order to decent in them he has to have well-defined muscles. He also makes sure that he has proper skin care so no part of him ever looks dry or cracked in the Carthaki heat. He is also very clean and has been known to take several baths a day, not to mention the amount of perfumes that he wears.

Around his eyes he will sometimes put a thin line of kohl to make them darker, but he usually only does this for formal gatherings. Boaz is a fan of body art, he is too fickle for anything as permanent as a tattoo, but he enjoys having his skin painted with beautiful designs, especially before parties, though for more formal gatherings he has to be more selective about his adornment.

He has his ears pierced and would probably have pierced additional holes to hold more earrings if he thought that his father wouldn’t have objected. Boaz likes anything gold, expensive, or shiny. He wears excessive amounts of jewelry from necklaces to earrings to bracelets, there isn’t much that he wouldn’t wear. Usually Boaz can be seen in intricately folded white linen kilts and sandals, but he also likes to have a red, purple, or gold cloth wrapped around his shoulder. He does not shy away from fur either, his favorite being cheetah, though this is usually reserved for special occasions.

Also, Boaz is colorblind, a fact that very few know about him. The Emperor is worried that Tortall could fault this blindness as a reason to break Boaz’s betrothal with the princess so the secret is jealously guarded.

Backstory

Family History ∙ The Emperor’s first marriage was fairly typical, it was a strategic marriage to a woman called Koihya that had been carefully arranged since the Emperor was a small boy. The marriage went smoothly, all parties were satisfied. He was married to his first wife for a year before he was ready to take a second wife, another strategic marriage.

However, the Emperor found himself falling in love with a lowly handmaiden, named Aloli, from an obscure past. She was very beautiful and soulful, she was a great dancer and singer that could entertain the court for hours. The young Emperor wanted to take her for a mistress, but as he fell deeper and deeper into love with her he decided that wasn’t enough. He broke the engagement that had been set up between himself and the woman that had been selected for his second wife, which scandalized the entire country, and took the Aloli for his second wife. His first wife had already borne him a child and she was pregnant with a second and Aloli soon became pregnant. She delivered a daughter, which further upset the country because they had faced so much scandal and she was not even able to provide a son.

The Emperor then decided to marry the woman that had been set up for him before Aloli, she was disappointed and enraged to be the third wife, but accepted the proposal regardless. It is rumored that he was so angry at Aloli for coming between her and the Emperor that she harassed her constantly, joined by the Koihya, the first wife, who was of rich heritage as well and disliked such a lowly person to have come to an equal rank.

The harassment of the other wives, the disappointment of a daughter, and the fact that the Emperor gradually fell out of love with her, caused a great sadness for Aloli. She was not resigned to strategic marriages like the other wives, but instead was a true romantic. She lived for six years in this hostile environment, delivering Boaz and then another daughter, who was stillborn. After the stillborn daughter, Aloli was so devastated that she retreated to her quarters, only emerging very rarely. Two years after she had begun to recluse herself in her quarters, she was found dead. She died of poison, but to this day her death is a mystery. Most likely she had committed suicide, but rumors exist that it was the other wives, or that the Emperor had grown tired of her and been coerced into killing her by the other wives, or it had been some sort of assassination.

Family ∙ Emperor of Carthak- Father
Koihya- Emperor’s first wife- Age 49
Aloli –Mother (deceased)
Nineteen legitimate siblings
Hspetah- Sister (same mother, same father) Age 24

Birthplace ∙ Carthak
Background ∙ Growing up, Boaz had been rather close to his mother because she loved children and found no greater pleasure than spending time with her daughter and son. Yet, once she began to disappear into her quarters, Boaz saw her less and less. He began to spend more time with his brothers and peers and less time with his sister and mother. After his Aloli’s death, Boaz was devastated, but admittedly they had already been drifting apart.

He was almost eight years old when she died and he had trouble dealing with her death, which caused the first wife, Koihya. to take pity on him and they began a relationship in which they grew very close, closer even than her relationship with her natural children. Part of this relationship was built on Koihya’s guilt over being so harsh toward Aloli when she was alive; she blamed herself at least partly for her death, which she considers to be undoubtedly a suicide. She spoiled him, giving anything that his heart desired and drowning him in her affections, for which Boaz loved her back very much.

Socially, this alignment with Koihya coupled with his mother’s death, significantly raised Boaz’s status. He was one of the most prominent princes, and most definitely his wild lifestyle was always the main discussion of the country. Boaz was known as the wild prince, the public watches him readily for all his news of scandal. He is known for being stylish, always on the cutting edge of the newest fashion and the first to discard an old style.

Since a very young age, Boaz has had personal lessons for all of his studies, especially for training his Gift. It is a great cause of pride for the Emperor for a child to have the Gift so he was given special attention for that. The special attention went to his head very quickly, as did the parties and the ladies, he went from a slightly shy, awkward boy to an over-confident, aggressive young man very quickly. He found that he got a lot farther by being arrogant than humble and it was better to get one’s way to be forceful rather than thoughtful. The public couldn’t get enough of stories of his antics, they knew about every party that got a little out of hand and watched him carefully for every change in fashion.

It was this notability that earned him a betrothal to the Tortallan Princess and also the Emperor jumped at the chance to send Boaz to the University in Corus, though he hopes that Boaz will show a little more decorum in Tortall than he does in Carthak. Boaz was never one to turn down an adventure so he agreed readily to travel to Tortall to train his Gift.

It was a quiet day at the University, only a few students were milling around the somber stone buildings or walking through the neatly pruned bushes and trees with books tucked under their arms. The sun shone wanly from the sky, making the shadows stretch long across the ground. An ornate carriage rattled past the buildings, followed by two large carts stuffed full of dark servants in strange attire and trunks that were stacked precariously on top on one another. The servants looked tired from having to haul all of the trunks onto the cart after already suffering a long trek from a distant country.

In the first carriage a dark face looked out from the window, he looked boredly at the passing buildings, then disappeared back into the darkness of the carriage.

The carriage rolled to a stop in front of one of the buildings were there was a collection of Tortallan servants lined up in front of the doorway. When the carriage stopped in front of them, one man walked quickly to the door with the intent of opening it for the occupant, but a burly Carthaki guard stepped between him and the carriage. The guard stepped back and opened the door, allowing Boaz to step out into the fading sunlight. He had been prepared for his arrival by wearing extra jewelry and a fur robe, with his wild black hair dotted with gold beads he looked positively exotic, but alas the only people present to witness his grand arrival was the line-up of servants. Disappointed, Boaz looked around, the whole country was rather a let-down. It was a little too chilly for his taste and there was not much of a show of wealth or beautiful ladies, he let a little of his distaste show in his expression.

A Tortallan servant rushed up to his side, “A thousand welcomes, you Highness,” he said eagerly. “On behalf of my country and the University, I would like to express-“

Boaz raised his hand, “Yes, yes,” he said, cutting the man off. He was expecting a little more fanfare at his arrival than this, where were the important people? He sneered at the servant, then tipped his head up and started walking forward. He snapped at his own head servant and waved him toward the Tortallan servant, they could talk together, but Boaz certainly didn’t care to listen. He strode past the line of servants to the door, he could tell they were unsure what to do at this point, but eventually one of them learned enough to scramble forward and open the door for him.

Boaz walked into the building, which was where he was assuming that his quarters were located, he wasn’t about to ask anyone to make sure though. Luckily the Tortallan servant caught on and led the way to a set of double doors. The servant flung the doors open, Boaz stepped into the room and looked around. He instantly felt a little nauseous, the sitting room looking dull and tired, the servants had prepared for his arrival by arranging a few vases of flowers around the room and by setting out a tray of fruit.

Boaz let out a sigh as the rest of his servants caught up to him. The Tortallan head servant came into the room behind him, “Do the quarters suit you, sire?” he asked.

With a laugh Boaz walked across the room, he grabbed the flowers by the handful, walked to the window and tugged it open. He tossed the flowers out, then stepped back and looked around the room critically, there was a painting of a child with a dog hanging over the fireplace. “That has to go,” Boaz muttered. Boaz walked over to it and yanked it off the wall, he was half way to the window with it before the servant could stop him. The servant had to literally take it from his hands, Boaz shrugged and walked back to the couch. There were some pastel pillows arranged on the couch, “All of this,” he said, “Gone.”

His servants nodded and got to work. The Tortallan servants just gaped at him. Boaz rounded on the room, his sandals slapping the ground as he paced. “My quarters will reflect the power of a warrior and the majesty of Carthak,” he announced as though he was giving an official speech instead of simply asking that his room be redecorated. “Make it so,” he said with flourish.

He walked to the closest door, intending to storm out of the sitting room on that note, but the first door happened to be a closet. He slammed it shut and went to the next door, it led to a small kitchen, that door too was slammed closed. The next door led thankfully to his bedroom, it too looked like a Tortallan grandmother had decorated it and he walked inside, shutting the door behind him. He dropped his fur coat onto the nearest chair and lowered himself onto the bed, biting his lower lip. That episode was bound to get the Tortallans talking, his presence in the country was not going to be ignorable, he would teach the Tortallans a thing or two about culture and class.

Boaz stretched out on his bed, he had five years before his betrothal was a marriage, that meant five years of freedom. He smiled to himself, these Tortallans were such savages, he would have a fun time with them and he could only hope that the selection of ladies got a little better than what he had seen so far.
