The year is 2020. Technology has not advanced much in the past twelve years, due to a conflict between major nations of the world. In other words, a war.
Suddenly, the war ended, the nations joined together under a common threat. The Mysts, an anarchist group, was trying to overthrow the governments of the world. The Mysts released their secret weapon, a bioweapon designed to wipe out humanity.
It was a disease they had nicknamed Posy, because the symptoms included turning bright red as if by sunburn, overheating, and fainting spells before eventual death. Unfortunatly, the Mysts forgot to design a vaccine, or they did and it didn't work.
Posy spread across the globe, leaving cities and towns dead and empty. The Mysts, people, the government, all were killed. Except for a select few.
About every 5%% (5 per mill, or 5 out of every thousand) of people were strangely immune to Posy, or were extremely resilient and survived the disease. Strangely, some of those who were immune, or survived the disease began to have something strange happen to them. In them, exposure to the deadly strain awoke gifts, mind over matter, you might say.
Many of the ones who have survived have come to the small town of Ashland, just a few miles away from New York, hoping to find a new life there. Now all the survivors face a hard and grueling life, trying to survive without modern technology, being self reliant. Together, they try to work together as a peaceful community, but, you know, stuff happens.
There are also the Pirates, a vicious gang. They try to kill or control the people in Ashland. They often steal food or attack people on the roads. The People of Ashland must protect their settlement from the Pirates at all costs.
