Introductions

Character’s Name ∙ King Jerold of Conté
Age ∙ 43
Gender ∙ Male
Residing ∙ The Palace
Character Class ∙ Royalty
Occupation ∙ King of Tortall

Mindset

Sexual Orientation ∙ Heterosexual
Overall Personality ∙ Jerold has a very powerful personality, which is a perfect fit for a king. It’s not his physical presence that awe people, but his words and actions. It’s very rare to find a person who doesn’t like Jerold on a personal level. Some may not agree with his politics, but like him as a person. Part of that is Jerold’s doing, but some of that is just him.

Jerold tries hard to keep up a positive appearance. He is always seen smiling and rarely seen angry. When upset or irate, the man keeps it to himself. He never vents where others might overhear because even that is seen as highly inappropriate in his eyes. That doesn’t mean that he never gets mad (and he does indeed get mad), but only that he doesn’t like others to see that side of him. Jerold takes his responsibilities as king very seriously and thinks that part of being king is being positive. If others were to see him in any other mood but the one he wants them to see, it wouldn’t be right.

At a very young age, Jerold learned his manners and never forgot them. He is one of the politest people anybody could ever meet, but will sacrifice politeness for the wellbeing of his country. His ability to keep his manners in check has made Jerold a skilled diplomat. Jerold often uses those skills in his private life, but with a family like his, who wouldn’t? When he’s not polite, most people find it a bit hard to tell. Jerold masks most of his words in a polite tone, so even when he’s angry, people who don’t know him won’t know it. This often comes in handy for when there are heated debates among him and other nobles.

Jerold is, has been, and always will be a family man. He loves his family very much and wishes that he could spend more time with them. The last few years have been very hectic for him and he hasn’t spent as much time with his family as he would have liked. Despite the fact that his marriage was arranged, Jerold grew to love his wife. If given time, Jerold will love anybody. They just need to prove themselves to him and that can be done in the smallest of ways. He does feel that he has been a bit lax in his fatherly duties and intends to show more of a presence to his children. Jerold just wants what’s best for them, and will do whatever he thinks is necessary.

Reflection

Height ∙ 5’11”
Weight ∙ 155 lbs.
Overall Appearance ∙ For a king, Jerold doesn’t look as powerful as he could. When seen dressed normally, he might be mistaken as any other noble. Dressed up for court functions give him a sense of regality, but it’s really Jerold’s personality that makes him powerful. Jerold has a solidly built body, with some muscles. They’re nothing like they were when he was just knighted, but the man didn’t let them turn into fat either. In fact, there is practically no fat on his body at all. His height helped with most of that, but other weight was lost due to stress and the like.

Jerold has a face that was once called handsome (his wife probably still calls it that), but has gained many worry lines over the years. He is blind in his left eye, but there was no permanent damage to the surrounding face area. The green eye is just glazed over and can often be found ‘looking’ somewhere else. Jerold has no control over it and can’t see anything from it. Over the past several years, the king let himself grow a small beard, which looks rather dignified if he says so himself. His hair is rather short, but to a fashion that Jerold quite likes. He wasn’t fortunate enough to receive the coal black hair of the Conté line, but it is dark enough for him to fit in.

Backstory

Family History ∙ The Conté line is long and prestigious and has bred many great kings and queens. Jerold’s parents were already crowned when they gave birth to him. His mother had many stillborns before him, making their first living child all the more precious. It was a miracle that she managed to have two more children, but she did. The old King and his wife built up a legacy that has been an honor to uphold. When the couple died within a year of each other, the country was devastated. Now, a new line of the Conté family has surfaced and hopes to do as well, if not better, than its predecessors.

Birthplace ∙ the Tortallan Palace
Background ∙ Ever since the day Jerold was born, he was treated differently. As the oldest son of the already reigning monarchs, he was needed to fill the position of heir. Most of the kingdom breathed a sigh of relief when the boy was born, glad at last to have a future ruler. Nobody was more happy than his parents, and they made sure to give the future king the best life possible. The best life meant all of the attention everyone at the palace could offer and this put a certain strain on the young boy. Even when hew as joined by a younger sister and brother, the pressure was not alleviated. Jerold was expected to go to school for longer, be polite to everyone he met and much more. Despite this, Jerold’s outlook on life was good. He just had to wait a bit longer before he could finish his studies and go play with his younger siblings. This didn’t much bother him, though there were still the occasional tantrums where ‘it’s not fair!’ was yelled. This phase didn’t last long, and most everyone in the palace forgot it ever happened.

As most heirs do, Jerold started page training at the age of ten. He did well and applied himself like he thought he should. By the time he had finished his page training, Jerold realized how important his role as Crown Prince was. The boy seriously devoted himself to making his squiredom better than his page years had been. In the last year before his Ordeal, there had been talks of a marriage for the soon-to-be-knight, but they had stopped before Jerold heard much more. Then, when Rittevon of Lenman started to conquer the Kyprish Isles, the talks resumed. At this point, the newly knighted Jerold began to take more interest. He met his bride-to-be before, but could not remember enough about her to know if he liked her or not. Whether he did or didn’t was not the question because Jerold married her at the wishes of his parents in 175 H.E.

When Jerold was twenty, he was attacked while visiting the countryside with his family. It wasn’t clear if the assassin was aiming for him, his father, or both, but he managed to hit Jerold before being chased by guards. The Crown Prince was injured and brought immediately back to Corus, but not before he became permanently blinded in the left eye. Surrounded by family and the thoughts and prayers of others, Jerold recovered in time for the birth of his firstborn: a son. The joy he experienced when his son was born outweighed his anger at being blinded. He even asked for mercy for his would-be-assassin, but his father would not hear of it. With the help of Anna and Zarian, Jerold moved past what could have been a hard part in his life rather quickly.

Zarian suffered his first episode just before their second child was born, displeasing Jerold to no end. He was scared for his son and perplexed at what this would mean for the kingdom. As a future king himself, Jerold knew how hard it was. With an illness like Zarian’s, the path to becoming king would be full of challenges. Also, Jerold did not like the reactions of other nobles. They weren’t pleased at this development either. Before anybody could decide what to do on the matter of Zarian, Anna gave birth to a daughter. Jerold was happy, but much of his thoughts were now occupied by the failing health of his mother.

When the queen died, Jerold tried to comfort his father, fell into a pool of grief himself. In 185 H.E, only a few months after Jerold’s mother passed, his father did as well. This was almost too much for the twenty-eight year old. He wasn’t ready to be crowned king, but it was the only thing to do. He tried to motivate himself, but couldn’t even find joy in the birth of his second daughter. Anna was the one to pull him out of his depression and made him realize that he was King and she was Queen and his parents must be left for memories. It succeeded and Jerold was able to become the king his people needed.

Jerold and Anna’s children grew and the pair began to see strong personalities emerge. Liadan’s had something to be desired, but Jerold gave her what she wanted when he discovered that she wouldn’t budge. He wasn’t pleased with the idea of not sending her to the convent, but it was all he could do at the moment. The next few years brought him two more children, a girl and boy. At Roger’s birth, Jerold couldn’t help but feel relieved. A second son was good especially considering Zarian’s condition.

Just three years after Kaira’s birth, the tensions between Tortall and the Yamani Isles was at an all time high and war was declared. Jerold had tried his best to advert it, but his Council had thought it was best. For the next three years, the king spent much of his time working on solutions to bring peace and the crowning of a new Yamani Emperor seemed to help. Within months of that, the war was declared over and Jerold could breathe again. He now focuses most of his time on rebuilding his kingdom’s morale and his people’s trust in the crown.

Jerold relaxed in his office after a particularly long day of paperwork. It never seemed like his father had this much paperwork to do. If Jerold had known about that when he was younger, the boy would have certainly been less enthused at becoming king. Of course, he was never particularly excited to rule, because that would mean that his father would have to die in order for that to happen. Everyone made sure Jerold was prepared, which he most certainly was, but that didn’t stop him from not wanting the job. His reasons were slightly selfish and never to be shared with others, but Jerold often thought of them.

Sighing, the man wished for once that he had the Gift. That way, he wouldn’t have to get up to pour himself a glass of wine. Feeling his age as he rose, Jerold made his way to the cabinet where he kept glasses. He wasn’t much of a drinker, but a day like today deserved a good glass of wine. He took the wine bottle back to his seat and considered his own son. He often wondered if Zarian thought the same things he had thought. Surely some things, but his son’s illness added a whole other element to the mix. The two never talked about it much, as Jerold didn’t like the thought of his son dying before he did. As always, this train of thought led to Roger. Despite the fact that Jerold knew it was wrong of him to think of his second son as a backup, he still did. Nobody knew that he felt this way, not even Anna, because he was aware of the impact that it would have on his family.

The king took another sip from his glass and closed his eyes. He didn’t want to have those thoughts anymore. In fact, he didn’t really want to think at all. He’d had a long day and all these thoughts were not helping at all. Instead, he cleared his mind of everything and just listened. Soon enough, even the listening became faded and in minutes Jerold was asleep.
